Why Site-Specific Solar Racking Certificates Matter
A safe rooftop solar installation depends on more than selecting the right panels and mounting system. The design must also account for the building structure, roof characteristics and wind conditions at the project site.
Site-specific certificates generally fall into two categories. A structural certificate assesses whether the building can support the proposed solar array, while an array frame certificate assesses whether the panels, rails, fixings and installation layout are suitable for the site. These are different from the general certificates supplied by racking manufacturers.
Wind loading is a major part of the assessment. Building height, location, surrounding obstructions and topography all influence the site wind speed calculated under AS 1170.2:2021. Factors such as the regional gust wind speed, terrain category and terrain-height multiplier can significantly affect rail spacing, fixing requirements and suitable installation areas.
Accurate roof information is equally important. Purlin spacing, purlin span, thickness, profile and material all influence how much load the structure can safely withstand. This information should be obtained from roof plans or confirmed through onsite measurements.
